The Present is a Gift – Part 3

The Present is a GiftFinally, the applause began to taper off. Most of those who had been seated remained standing, wiping away years.

Grady continued, “Here’s a funny thing. There was this old guy sitting there by my bed when I woke up. He’s smiling and he says something like, ‘There’s still plenty of time.’ I am a little confused. I push the button to make my bed prop me up.”

“So now that I can see a little better, I see that he has a book in his lap. It’s “A Christmas Carol.” It takes me a second, but I realized that he had wandered in to my room and sat down next to my bed hours before and introduced himself. He tells me that every year he reads this story to about ten or fifteen patients, two or three patients a week, as Christmas approaches and would I mind being the first person he reads it to this year, and I said no.”

“So, he began reading and I obviously fell asleep and he just kept reading and I basically incorporated the whole thing into this big long and involved dream where I thought I was Ebenezer Scrooge.”“So anyhow, that nap was a life-changing experience. Right then and there, with my new friend sitting next to me, that’s when I made a decision. It doesn’t have to be fiction. I can do like Ebenezer did. I can be a new man. I can change.”

“I prayed and asked for help to know what I could say and do to make up for being so unpleasant to all of you for so long. Since I don’t have much of a social life, I realized that, other than my clients, the only friends I have are the people I work with.”

“I know I have been awful to all the people I work with. I know I was not being a friend to all of you, but I want you to know that this is the world’s best little PCLH brokerage and I sell a lot of policies, but I couldn’t do it without such amazing support. So even though I have not been your friend, you all have been my friends and I’ve squandered it with rudeness and selfishness and… and I’m not going to be that way anymore.”

“I’ve already spoken with the brothers and they have enthusiastically agreed to allow me to host a two-day workshop to go over exactly what I do; how I am able to sell so many policies and keep my clients happy. In the past, whenever one of the sales team has asked how I outsell everyone, I used to say, ‘I have figured it out. You can figure it out.’ That nonsense ends here and now.”

“Starting in January, we are going to take care of business!” More applause.

Grady smiled and put his hands up. “That’s all I have to say. Let’s have a good time tonight!”

He started putting the microphone down while his colleagues applauded and cheered. Then someone yelled, “What’s in the boxes?”

Grady rolled his eyes as if to say ‘Where is my head?’ “Thank you! I almost forgot about that. I’ve been looking forward to this for weeks. Please pass those around. Everybody gets one!”
